A few months back, I searched on YouTube for videos that can fill me in on the latest scoop of the pork barrel scandal. Most of the videos were in Tagalog (I can't understand Tagalog fluently). Few videos were available when the newscasters spoke in English. However, they would only speak a little English and mostly Tagalog.
*Weeks past and I had given up on finding a news source that covered Filipino news in English. Then at random, I stumbled to a blog that covered not just Filipino news but also news around world. While at their blog, I discovered that they had some YouTube videos of some news coverage. I was finally relieved. I found Rappler.
English Translated
Rappler is a news source that provides Filipino news in English both in their blog and their YouTube channel. Rappler simplifies the situation of the news to help their viewers understand efficiently. They also limit any bias perspectives onto their news sources. This is very important for the Filipino-American community.
**As a Filipino American, I want to know what is happening to the Philippines with simplicity. It's already difficult to understand what the news is talking about when it is spoken in Tagalog. And sometimes, the translation can be distorted to English when there are some bias views included. Rappler's way of providing news makes me feel that they are trustworthy, reliable, and overall makes you want to watch the next news coverage.
As an overall American, news in the Philippines are not covered daily in the U.S. media. With Rappler's consistent video uploads, I am now provided with Filipino news daily.
YouTube: News Topics
Rappler's YouTube channel covers news topics of events of the Philippines from a local, national, and international perspective. They also cover world wide news topics that are currently occurring and some entertaining interview videos.
- Local news such as a story of a Filipino citizen riding her skateboard without any hands.
- National news such as a story of the pork barrel scandal I mentioned earlier above and from a previous post.
- International news such as China's military influence on Philippines and other surrounding Asian countries.
- World wide news currently occurring such as issues of Ukraine conflict.
- Entertaining interview videos such as "Ask Margie" segments.
Blog: News Topics
Rappler's blog provides the same news topics covered in their YouTube channel. They also cover a variety of other topics like Philippines' lifestyle, sports, tech news, etc.
***Video Organization and Structure
There are two main types of videos Rappler posts in their YouTube channel. The first type are short videos that contain one news update or interview. The second type of videos are "newscast of the day." They contain a collective of news updates that are currently happening on the day they are posted. These videos are about 15-30 minutes long depending on how many news updates there are and how long each update is talked about.
The "newscast of the day" always ends with the newscaster stating a collective of news topics that are important in the world and recommended to their viewers. They also state what is the mood of the day based from their mood navigator. The mood navigator is the sum of all the voting polls of the readers' mood for each blog post. If the majority of readers vote that they are angry in most of the blog posts the day they are published, then the mood of that day is angry.
****I find it unique and cool that Rappler uses a mood navigator. It makes Rappler and the viewers/readers know how general consensus is feeling about a certain news topic(s). Knowing the mood of the general consensus can help Rappler coordinate which news topics should be covered and which should not. Another potential the mood navigator can create is discussion among the general consensus. Some may reason out why a certain topic made a general consensus angry, happy, etc.
*****A Heads Up
From time to time, the newscaster that hosts the "newscast of the day" will make a couple of mistakes like small stuttering or pronounce a few words wrong followed by the correct pronunciation. It's all good though. In fact, it helps lighten the mood when the newscaster is broadcasting some topics that are devastating and disastrous.
******Traffic
Currently, Rappler has about 43, 512 subscribers. Their total views is 25,365,141 views. However, their general views per video ranges about 100 to 10,000 views. They post a lot of content but don't receive a huge daily traffic.
